Sitting out the ice storm

Southeast Kansas was hit by a major ice storm this weekend. We were without power several times the last three days, the longest stretch around 12 hours . I'm really grateful for those electric company guys and gals out in this mess working overtime to keep the lights on and heat going for thousands of us. We were lucky some folks over in Missouri and down in North East Oklahoma could be that way for a few more days. For the most part we were ready, my wife and I sat it out in front of a warm fire playing cards and reading. What really struck me was just how quiet it was around here without the sounds of electrical devices.

I remember several days without power. Cooking on the wood stove, candles, the kids making a tent in the living room out of blankets and chairs. Telling stories. Then the power came back on and the magic left.

I'm glad you are ok and had resources to keep you warm and occupied. Thanks for the update.

Watching news reports about this ice storm really got me thinking about how dependent we are on the grid. I have a wood stove and a natural gas range that could be lit with a match. I have gas-fired steam heat, but the boiler has all kinds of fancy, modern controls and that means it won't run without electricity. Many folks are even more helpless without power. I think we may be getting too dependent on the system.
