My World Tuesday River Market

Sunday morning we were in Kansas City and went down to the river market.
There is a little bit of everything for everyone.
So many types of fresh vegetables and fruit its hard to choose. Organic and not so organic, local and not so local. You can find heirloom tomatoes in all shades.

Spices sold from bags fill the air with an assortment of wonderful aromas.

Not sure what this is suppose to be. My wife thought it would go nicely outside her office, (shes an elementary school administrator), she has a dark side I think.

My World Tuesday; Elmers Garden

Elmer and Helen live in North East Kansas, he is 75 ish shes just shy of 82. She smiles and says "I married a younger man the second time around". Both have raised large families and have too many grandchildren to count. They live together in a century old limestone farmhouse where one hears the birds outside (or the wind for that matter) only when the windows are open, it is quiet and solid, like them. Elmer raises a garden every year that is about half as big as a football field. They raise tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, melons, grapes among other things, they make their own ketchup, pickles and just about everything else they feed you when you show at dinnertime. They make their own wine and are kind of frugal with it when it comes to visitors. They will offer you a taste, it warms the soul, and when you roll you eyes and say "another?" They smile again and reply "just a few bottles left for winter".
Helen is my wife's mom. My wife went up late in July to help them put up corn. A days work and 70 pints of some of the sweetest corn around my wife returned with a few bushels and many pints. I found these photos this evening thinking of both Elmer and Helen after we had some of the frozen corn, couldn't wait for fall.

My World Tuesday

The other morning I went for a hike along a creek bottom near home. Taking advantage of the cool mornings we have had lately I knew the mosquitoes would be few and far apart.
I was looking for some Cardinal Flower which should have been in bloom for a while now here in this part of the world. I'm not sure if its named for its color being that of a songbird or a Catholic Cardinal in his red robes, but it could have been either. Bright red it stands out among the green in cool wet places like this.
I'm not sure what this yellow flower is , it reminded me of a evening primrose but way too tall. It pointed the way for me.
Sure enough I found it growing along the stream.
According to my well worn Owensby Prairie Wildflowers; Cardinal Flower Lobelia cardinalis is a member of the Bluebell Family, " This plant has milky juice and is reputed to be of medicinal value, but poisonous. Nervous Diseases, convulsions, asthma, tetanus, and other nervous disorders have been treated by Lobelia species. Pawnee Indians used this plant as a love charm"
Poisonous , medicinal, love charm go figure. That's whats happening in my world this week.
